Summer weather is just around the corner and we are all starting to feel the hiking itch - I know I am! If you're eager to immerse yourself in Quebec's rich natural and cultural heritage, the Charlevoix region awaits with open arms, offering a wide range of beautiful vistas.

Join me today as I share with you my top 3 favorite hikes in the region, along with some stories & images that will help you plan your next adventure.

A little bit about the Charlevoix region

The Charlevoix region has quite a unique geological history; it was formed after a meteorite impact nearly 350 million years ago. This event resulted in the creation of the Charlevoix crater, one of the largest impact craters on Earth!

View from the top of Mont du Lac des Cygnes in Charlevoix, Quebec. The mountains are green and the sky is blue with some puffy clouds.

The region's diverse terrain includes mountains, deep valleys, and fjords, reflecting this ancient cataclysm and providing a backdrop for mountain adventures like the following hikes.

Mont du Dome Trail

The Mont du Dôme trail is probably one of the most popular hiking trails in the Charlevoix region after the famous Acropole des Draveurs. The trail is approximately 8 kilometers round trip and it is considered intermediate level. There are two ways up; the steeper/shorter way up where you hike up some big boulders, and there is the slightly longer way up, which is mostly in the forest and less steep.

I chose to go up the steep way, through the rocky terrain. Most of the time you feel like you are walking up what used to be an old creek. On the way down, I took the more mellow & easier route, which takes you through a nice forest.

The Mont-du-Dome hike does get quite busy in the summer months, particularly in July & August and also during fall, when the leaves turn to a nice golden color.

During the busier months, it is best to start the hike early in the morning, or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Parking is very limited at the trailhead, with only about 15-20 parking spots available. More parking is available at the Mont-du-Lac-des-Cygnes trailhead just down the road.

Did you know? Mont du Dome is named for its distinctive dome-shaped summit, offering a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding landscape. Keep an eye out for wildlife sightings along the way, as the region is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna.

Mont-du-Lac-des-Cygnes Trail

This hiking trail is a great alternative to the busier Mont du Dome trail. The Mont-du-Lac-des-Cygnes trail is easy to find & well indicated; there is also plenty of parking close to the trailhead. Make sure you pop into the visitor's center to pay your trail fees, grab a snack and use the restrooms before you embark on your adventure.

With a trail length of approximately 10 kilometers round trip and an intermediate difficulty level, this hike offers an opportunity to soak into Charlevoix's rich landscape.

As you ascend through dense forests and traverse rocky terrain, consider the significance of Lac des Cygnes (or Swan Lake in English) as a cultural and ecological centerpiece of the region. There are many scenic viewpoints along the way, with some that are definitely worth a short break! From these viewpoints, you will be able to see the neighboring Mont du Dôme, the windy road below and possibly some rock climbers on the cliffs above.

Did you know that Charlevoix is a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve? This designation recognizes Charlevoix's commitment to balancing conservation with sustainable development, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy its natural treasures.

La Chouenne Trail

This trail was a great little discovery when I first hiked it last summer. Don't be fooled by its short length, there are some steep parts in the trail that will make you sweat a little! With a trail length of approximately 6 kilometers round trip and a easy to intermediate difficulty level, this hike offers breathtaking 360 degree views at the top.

It's also a great spot for sunrise or sunset! As you wander through meadows adorned with wildflowers, mossy rocks & lichen, make sure you pause to listen to the whispers of the wind through the trees and the rustle of leaves, as the forest comes alive.

Fun fact: La Chouenne trail is named after the mythical creature said to inhabit the forests of the region, adding a sense of mystery and intrigue to your hiking adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for signs of this elusive creature as you explore the trail, and immerse yourself in the magical untamed wilderness.

The Charlevoix region is a wonderful playground for the adventurous souls and I already can't wait to be back there. The mountains have a way to take my breath away every time. Here is to hoping that the magic of Charlevoix captivates your heart and soul. Happy hiking!
