As the sun's rays grow softer, and the days begin to shorten, nature embarks on one of its most enchanting seasons: autumn. Mont Orford is a great place to enjoy the breathtaking rainbow of colors that takes place during the month of October. Every landscape becomes a work of art, it is truly a magical time of the year. Let's discover some of the best hiking trails to enjoy fall at Mont Orford.
Mont Orford offers a variety of hiking trails that cater to different skill levels and preferences. Here's an overview of some of the hiking trails you can explore on the mountain.
The most family friendly trail
The easiest way to get to the top of the mountain is with the trail called 4km. It will take you around one hour to get to the top, maybe a little less or more depending on your skill level. I would consider this trail to be easy to intermediate, mostly due to its elevation change of around 600m.
The trail is quite wide itself, being a ski run in the winter, there is plenty of space for everyone. You can find a map on the Mont Orford website or check the one below for more information on start point and hiking trails available.
Conquering the Summit
If you are looking for more of a uphill challenge, I would recommend taking the trail named "super" for your way up the mountain. The trail is actually right under the main chairlift and it is only 1.5km long and considered a rather difficult trail due to its quick elevation change.
The ascent is quite steep at some places and extra caution should be used if hiking in wet conditions. As you trudge through the lush forests and navigate rocky terrains, anticipation builds for the grand reward awaiting at the summit.
The summit
Once you reach the top, a breathtaking panorama of the Eastern Townships will unfold before your eyes. The reward is here: the sprawling landscape in all shades of oranges, yellows and reds, adorned with serene lakes and rolling hills. It's a sight that words can't adequately describe. There are 5 different belvederes up there, make sure you check out each of them as they offer different views of the eastern townships.
Planning your adventure
Whether you are seeking a peaceful escape or a challenging hike, Mont Orford delivers, making it a must-do outdoor adventure for all, especially in the fall! Be sure to check for trail conditions before you go, the mountain's website is always a great place to start. They even have some events during the autumn season, opening up the gondolas on the weekends for all to enjoy!

Tips for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience
As we move into the quiet serenity of winter, let us reflect on the lesson of autumn: that change, even in its most profound and breathtaking forms, is an essential part of the cycle of life. And just as the trees shed their leaves, we too can let go of the old, making space for new growth and new adventures. Here are a few essentials for the perfect autumn hike:
- Check the Weather Conditions
On the morning of your hike, check local weather forecasts to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey. Mountain weather can be unpredictable, even on the smallest mountains! Packing appropriate clothing and gear is essential. Don't forget that it is always a little cooler and windier at the top of the mountain.
- Pack Essentials
Always pack a few of the essentials when going on a short hike. Some of these essentials include: a waterproof jacket, a long sleeve shirt, snacks, water, and your phone. Extra layers are a must during the fall season - even if it is sunny outside, days get darker and colder quicker.
Here's to hoping you will be as mesmerized as I was with these hikes at Mont Orford.
