Les Palissades de Charlevoix: a photographer's dream in the fall

I recently discovered a new area of the beautiful Charlevoix region and I think it's about time I tell you all about Les Palissades de Charlevoix. I couldn't believe how grand the cliffs were and how enchanting the fall foliage was when I visited. This place is not only a photographer's dream, but a hiker & a climber's paradise.

Les Palissades de Charlevoix

Nestled in the heart of Charlevoix, the area is renowned for its striking geological formations. "Les Palissades" is a 400-meter-high granite wall and it is 4-kilometer-wide (yes, 4km wide!). This unique mountain range is undoubtedly one of Quebec's best-kept natural secrets.

Did you know? "The cliffs are part of a larger geological formation known as the Charlevoix Crater, created by a massive meteorite impact over 350 million years ago. This event not only shaped the region's rugged terrain but also contributed to the rich biodiversity that makes the area a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve."

Choosing your hiking trails

For those looking to explore the area on foot, there are several hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. When I went, I chose to do a loop around, for a total of 9 km with an elevation gain of 250m. I would still consider this hike intermediate because of the steeper parts and more challenging terrain. Early October was a wonderful time of the year to visit the area with the fall foliage nearing its peak in colors.

Let me tell you about the trails that make the loop around the mountains. You will need to take three different trails to complete the loop. Starting at the welcome cabin, go counter-clockwise with the first part of L'Aigle trail, then take Le Sylvain for 3.5km, followed by Le Rocher Perdu (1.4km) and back on L'Aigle trail to finish the loop. It will take you about 4 hours to complete the loop at a leisurely pace with tons of stops for capturing those sweet memories with your camera.

The trail was pretty quiet, I probably saw more wildlife than humans! It was just the kind of peace that I needed, it almost felt too quiet sometimes. I went during the week, perhaps it's more frequented on the weekends.

Rock climbing adventures

Les Palissades de Charlevoix is also a premier destination for rock climbing in Quebec. The towering cliffs provide over 250 climbing routes (!) that range from beginner to expert levels. The climbing season typically runs from May to October, with each route offering unique challenges and perspectives of the majestic surroundings.

For those new to the sport, guided climbing experiences are available through the Adventurex website. They also offer a wide range of activites like the famous Via Ferrata, bike rentals, ziplining and canoe/kayak rentals. Fun fact: the Via Ferrata activity also runs during the winter!

Les Palissades de Charlevoix is accessible year-round, though I would say the best time to visit for hiking and climbing is from late spring through early fall. The winter months transform the area into a snowy wonderland, offering opportunities for snowshoeing and even ice climbing for those brave enough to face the cold.

How to get there

Les Palissades de Charlevoix park is located near the small town of Saint-Siméon in Quebec. It's easily accessible by car, and ample parking is available at the trailheads. The park has several amenities, including rest areas, picnic spots, and shelters. There are also guided tours available for those who prefer a more structured experience.
