Hiking at Mont Saint-Bruno National Park

There's nothing quite like the excitement of discovering a hidden gem close enough to home. Just a short drive from Montreal is Mont Saint-Bruno - a local mountain filled with lush forests, hidden lakes, and enchanting trails. I recently hiked the trail called "Sentier des Lacs", let me tell you about some the best views.

Discovering the Sentier des Lacs trail

Mont Saint-Bruno National Park is more than just a mountain; it's a historical treasure wrapped in a grand forest . Formed in the early 18th century, this nature park has evolved into a sanctuary for both wildlife and wanderers. With over 25 kilometers of well-marked trails, it’s a perfect escape from the city and for anyone looking to connect with nature and uncover its secrets.

Imagine walking through a peaceful forest, the air filled with the sound of rustling leaves and birdsong floating in your ears. The trailhead begins in a wooded area right behind the welcome center. The trees are tall and the leaves so green - I can only imagine this place in the fall!

The trail is quite easy to follow, I would consider it great for beginners with little elevation, and a total of about 7.8 kilometers round trip. It took me around 2h15-2h30 to complete at a leisurely pace, camera in hand, stopping at every opportunity I had for a quick snap of the magic.

The trail meanders past five picturesque lakes, each one offering a unique snapshot of nature's work. Some of the lakes have a nice viewing platform with benches, perfect for a snack along the way.

As you walk through the forest, you will see Lac Seigneurial first, its the biggest lake them all. There is also another hiking trail that goes around the lake. Note that it can be quite busy on the weekends.

As you continue on the trail, you will find Lac des Bouleaux, where it's possible to rent canoes to go on the lake, weather depending. It's worth checking their website if you are planning a day out of it.

A little further out in the forest, you will get a peak at Lac à la Tortue and Lac des Atocas. It was nice to discover the last lake, Lac au Moulin where you can also get a view of two historic buildings; "Maison Murray" and the tea house "Le Vieux Moulin". This part of the Sentier des Lacs trail is a nice reward at the end of the hike. It's like discovering a little world through the forest, a place that seems frozen in time, especially during the week days where the park is more quiet.

Tips for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience

  • Start early: The early bird catches the worm—and the best views! Starting your hike early helps you avoid the weekend crowds and enjoy the park's tranquility in more enjoyable temperatures too.
  • Pack essentials: Water, snacks, take a picture of the map (with your phone), bug spray and sunscreen. Good shoes will make the journey more comfortable, especially on hilly terrain.
  • Leave no trace: Carry out what you bring in and stick to the trails to help preserve the park’s natural beauty.

As a photographer, I find that Mont Saint-Bruno Park offers endless opportunities to capture nature’s beauty. Through the trees, by the sparkling lakes, when the early morning light filters through the trees, casting a golden glow. Whether you’re capturing the grand forest in its stillness or the delicate details of a wildflower, Mont Saint-Bruno is a place to discover.

So, lace up your shoes, grab your camera, and set off on an adventure that promises to be not just a magnificent walk in the forest but also a deep connection with the natural and historical wonders of Mont Saint-Bruno. Happy hiking, and may your journey be as rewarding as the destination!
