A couple of summers ago I discovered this beautiful trail through a hiking challenge I had signed up for. Le Riverain (Le Yéti) Trail absolutely deserves a spot on your summer hiking list. It's not only an easy to moderate hike but it has unique views that will make you wonder if you are really in Quebec or not!
Tucked away in the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park, this day hike offers a perfect blend of peaceful riverside walks, sweeping panoramic mountain views, and rugged granite cliffs. It's not that difficult of a trail and it's just long enough to make it a nice daytime outdoor adventure. It's a dream for both hikers and photographers alike.
What to Expect on Le Riverain (Le Yéti) Trail
Le Riverain, sometimes called Le Yéti, is a trail of about 12 km (out-and-back) and it will take you about 4 hours to complete including some well deserved break. I think what I really like the most about this hike is the diversity of the views you get. From calm river crossings, to towering granite cliffs and panoramic views of the mountains and valleys, this hike really has it all.

The trailhead is easily accessible and it starts behind the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie visitor's center. For a shorter hike, you can take the free shuttle bus and start the trail at the Pont des Érables. This will save you a couple of kilometers but you will also miss one of the best cliff views of the hike if you choose this option.
Overall, the trail is mainly gravel and it is well-marked throughout. It wasn't too busy when I went but I always hike during the week to avoid the weekend crowds. t’s considered a moderate hike, but beginners who are in good shape can definitely handle it with a bit of patience and time. It's best to start early in the day if you are unsure.
Once you get to the end of the trail, you will start seeing the "Maple Damn" or the "Barrage des Érables" which is an important damn that was built 1958 and rebuilt a few times throughout the years. Make sure to give yourself some extra time to visit this historical bridge and read the educational panels on each side of the bridge.
There is also a beautiful hut on the other side of the bridge which sells food, drinks and souvenirs. Once you have explored the area, you can hop on the free shuttle bus to make your way back to the parking lot; it runs every 10-15minutes during high season.
If you have extra time in your day, make sure to book yourself a boat tour of the Malbaie River! The boat has a glass windows all around and up top too. It's a nice reward after your day hike and the views are absolutely worth it. There is a SEPAQ park guide onboard which tells you the story about the area which really completes the experience nicely.
Tips for First-Timers
If it's your first time hiking Le Riverain (Le Yéti) trail, here are a few tips to make the most of your adventure:
- Start early: Rise and shine! Morning hikes offer the softest light for photos and cooler temps. Plus, the trail is way quieter.
- Bring layers: Even in summer, mountain weather in Quebec can change quickly. Bringing a windbreaker or light jacket is a smart choice.
- Proper footwear is a must: There are some rocky sections and roots along the path. Hiking boots with good ankle support will make your life a lot easier.
- Pack water and snacks: There are no amenities along the trail. Plan to be self-sufficient, especially if you like taking long photo breaks!
- Leave No Trace: This trail is a natural treasure. Make sure to pack out everything you bring in, and respect the ecosystem.
Photography Tips for Le Riverain (Le Yéti)
As a landscape photographer based here in Quebec, I can't say enough about the photo opportunities along this trail. If you're into mountain photography, here’s what you should keep in mind:
- Golden hour is magic hour: this early morning or late afternoon light paints the mountains and forest with warm, gold blanket. It’s the perfect time for that dreamy landscape shot.
- Don't forget your wide-angle lens: capture the panoramic mountain views in all of their glory. A lens around the 16-35mm range is ideal.
- Look for framing: Use the trees or the winding river as natural frames for your shots. It adds depth and draws the viewer into the scene.

Hiking Le Riverain (Le Yéti) is like stepping into a hidden corner of the province. It's a natural beauty, the kind of place that still feels wild and untouched. It’s not the most famous trail in the region, but that’s one of the things that makes it so special.
